Growing up in Rochester

Introduction

This is about our family in Rochester, NY and growing up there in the house on Gorham St in the first part of the 20th century. The family lived in other houses in Rochester, but the Gorham St house is the only one that each of us knew. All the children lived there at some time, and when we finally left home, the house on Gorham St, number 20, is the home we left.

These are some incomplete and unconnected memories of living with parents who had come to a country where so much was new and strange and who were learning to be Americans. They were fortunate that they had family and friends here to help and to ease the transition. They came looking for a better life, and while they undoubtedly achieved that better life, it wasn't an easy life. They accomplished a lot, and they worked very hard for what they got.

The experiences of each of the children were different. Lou and Mitch grew up under different circumstances than Pearl and Et, and their experiences were different than Bucky's. But some things stayed the same, and some of that is what we're trying to recall.
