Chapter 3 - Working

Master Knitter

After Mitch died, and when the only children at home were Ethel and Buck, Mom became seriously involved with knitting, possibly as a form of therapy. She made sweaters for the children and the children's friends, and she made dresses for herself and for her daughters and their friends. Knitting instruction classes were given at Edward's Department Store on Main St, and Mom would go to those classes once or twice a week when she could. While she did receive knitting instruction at these classes, she may also have gone to them for the companionship they provided. Also, they provided her an opportunity to show the other women how accomplished a knitter she was. She was a very fast knitter, and could finish a sweater in two days, and a dress in a week.

Mom's style of knitting was different from the style that people were being taught at that time. The style that Mom used seemed to be more efficient and graceful than the style being taught. Pearl and Et, of course, used Mom's style, as did their friends who were taught by Mom.
