Chapter 3 - Working

After High School

All the children took the college preparatory curriculum in high school. After high school Lou enrolled in the University of Rochester and, after two years, transferred to Columbia where he had a scholarship. Mitch went to Cornell University on two merit scholarships, one from the New York state Board of Regents, and one awarded by Cornell. Buck went into the Navy after high school, and after being discharged he went to the University of Wyoming and then the University of Michigan under the veteran's GI Bill. For the girls, there was to be no college; it was not an option. Instead they enrolled in one of the commercial schools, the School of Commerce or the Rochester Business Institute to learn typing, shorthand, and office procedures. They did enroll in the Extension School of the UofR for evening courses.

Pearl had a job with one of the social agencies in Rochester working for a Mrs Richardson. On this job Pearl did most of her work at home, on Gorham St. She kept her typewriter on the desk in the dining room, and kept her files in the desk. She would go to Mrs Richardson's home frequently to deliver her work and discuss it, and to pick up additional assignments, but she did the majority of her work at home. She had this job for several years. When she left Mrs Richardson she took a job in the main office of Neisners, a variety store chain, on East Ave. She stayed with Neisners until she left Rochester to accept a civil service position in Washington, DC.

When Ethel completed her commercial training she got a job with the Board of Education, and eventually ended up at Franklin High School as an assistant to the guidance counselor, Mrs Colton. She left the job to be with Eddie as he was assigned to various Army camps in this country during the war. (Pearl also went to the different Army camps to which Gene was assigned.) When Eddie was sent overseas Ethel returned to Rochester and Gorham St and she took a job with the Army Ordnance Department. She had that job until the war was over and Eddie returned.
