Canning
Mom canned fruits and vegetables for use during the winter. She canned tomatoes, peaches, and pears, and she made grape jelly. She also made and canned kosher dill pickles and green tomatoes. Those pickles and tomatoes may have been the best in the world, and they went with any and every fleishig meal.
There was one year when Pearl and Et wanted to make and bottle root beer. Mom didn't participate in this operation but it was OK with her if the girls wanted to do it. They never did make root beer, though. There was a problem with the caps; they wouldn't stay on the bottles. The bottles kept exploding, bottle caps were ricocheting off the kitchen ceiling. The kitchen was a disaster area. They didn't make root beer a second time.
