Yom Kippur Drivers

Yom Kippur is a fast day. We, at least the men, fasted from sundown of the previous day to sundown of Yom Kippur. On the eve of the holiday we would have a big meal and then go to shul for services. The next morning it was back to shul for a full day of services. Pop would be there the whole time until services ended, about 5 pm or so. It would be about a half hour walk home now, and Pop hadn't had anything to eat since supper the night before. The male members of the congregation would send their sons or daughters home early and have them return with their automobiles to drive them home when the services were finished. Pop used to do that, too, when Mitch and Pearl were around. After they left there were no drivers in the house. So Pop would make that walk home from shul after having fasted for almost 24 hrs. He was a tough man.
