Yom Kippur Special
Pop was pretty serious about going to shul on the holidays, and on Yom Kippur he fasted from the end of the meal of the night before right on through to the end of services on Yom Kippur day. Strangely, though, he was tolerant about an activity that almost achieved the status of tradition on Gorham St.
On Yom Kippur afternoon Pearl and Et would invite their friends to our house for coconut cream pie which they baked then and there. It was a party. On Yom Kippur, no less! It was a lot of fun, and it became a yearly event. A half dozen or more of the girls' friends would show up and sit around and talk and eat and drink coffee. Mom was there and she didn't object. Pop must have known what was going on but he never said anything.
The only time we had coconut cream pie in our house was on Yom Kippur.
