Family Activities
Clubs
Mom and Pop were members of the Arbeiter Ring, the Workmen's Circle, a labor and social organization, and Mom belonged to Pioneer Women, a social organization. They weren't active in these organizations, but they did go to the picnics, and to some of the meetings and parties of Pioneer Women.
The children also belonged to clubs; some were asso- ciated with school activities, and others were of neighborhood friends. They ranged from the Athenian Literary Council (ALC), with its grand title and noble objectives, to clubs that were formed only so its members could get together and talk or to have a softball team. By the time we got to high school many of the clubs were Greek letter sororities or fraternities. Lou and Mitch belonged to the ALC, the group with the noble objectives. Our clubs all had constitutions, and the meetings were supposedly conducted according to the procedures of Robert's Rules of Order. At some of the club meetings there would be activities such as debates that were judged by outsiders, sometimes there would be guest speakers. Some clubs would make trips to places in town - museums or parks - or even out of town.
