Growing up in Rochester

Parental Guidance

Nevertheless

Our folks never taught us about ethics or values or standards. Those things were never discussed in the house, although the folks did have their standards and values. And we undoubtedly accepted some or most of their standards and values as our own. By example we learned not to cheat, to respect and to help others, to work hard.

One thing we knew for certain was that we didn' t want to embarrass our parents or our family. The thought that our parents might be called to school to discuss our grades or our behavior with a teacher or the principal was frightening. That would have been a real schande, shame. All the children did well in school, and the parents did not have to watch over us to see that we completed our school assignments.

The public schools of Rochester are probably also responsible for the standards and values we acquired. Whether it was in the curriculum or not, they did instill in us some measure of appreciation for learning and community. We occasionally think about how our Rochester friends and relatives turned out and we are thankful for what the Rochester public schools did for us.
